Oral Health Tips: Brushing and Flossing

In order to have a healthy smile, good dental care habits such a brushing and flossing are s must. However, are you using the right techniques? Read on to learn more about the correct way to brush and floss for a healthy smile for years to come.

Brushing Tips

First off, be sure that you are brushing your teeth twice a day. When you brush, do not rush! Take your time and do a thorough job. Also, be sure that you are using the right products. Choose a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. You may also consider an electric toothbrush which can reduce plaque more than a manual toothbrush.

You should also be sure to use good technique when brushing. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle and gently brush with short back and forth motions. Don’t forget to brush the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of the teeth, as well as the tongue.

Lastly, be sure to invest in a new toothbrush or replacement head for your electric toothbrush every 3-4 months to ensure the best cleaning.

Flossing Tips

While brushing your teeth is very important, sometimes a toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces between the teeth and under the gumline. This is why flossing is a key part of a healthy mouth.

When you floss, be sure to gently glide the floss between your teeth using a back and forth motion. Do not be too aggressive, as this could lead to bleeding or damaged gums. Also, consistency is key; while it may be hard to remember to floss every day, it really is important in order to remove debris and food that can be stuck between the teeth.
