Brushing and flossing are an important part of your oral hygiene. Many people resort to brushing alone and think it’s enough, however, flossing is an important part of teeth and gum care. By understanding the proper way to floss, you can ensure that your teeth remain clean and healthy!

Why Should I Floss

Cleaning between your teeth removes plaque that can contain cavity-causing bacteria. If the plaque isn’t removed, it hardens to create tartar. When tarter collects on the gum line, it can lead to gum disease. Brushing alone cannot remove this plaque between the teeth, only flossing can! This is why understanding the proper way to floss and making it a part of your daily routine is so important.

When Should I Floss

Whether you choose to floss before or after you brush your teeth, in the morning or before bed, the important thing is that you do it. The time you choose to floss doesn’t matter as much as doing a thorough job does so pick a time that fits best with your routine so you are less likely to forget.

How Should I Floss

There are a few techniques you can follow to ensure you’re getting the most out of flossing. First, break off about 18 inches of floss and wind the ends around each of your middle fingers. Holding the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers, guide the floss between each tooth, being careful not to snap the floss into the gums. To clean the gum line, curve the floss into a c against the tooth and gently slide it up between the gum and tooth. With an up and down motion, remove the floss and go to the next tooth using a clean section of floss every time.
