When you hear that you need a root canal, it can be alarming, but don’t worry! A root canal is not a scary procedure – it is one that can eliminate your discomfort to get you back to feeling like you. Read on to learn more about the procedure and what to expect.
Why Would Someone Need a Root Canal?
When the pulp, or the soft tissue in the root canal, becomes infected or inflamed due to decay or injury, a root canal is necessary. Common signs of inflamed or infected pulp include pain, temperature sensitivity, swelling, or discoloration of the tooth. However, sometimes, there are no symptoms at all, which is why regular dental appointments are important.
During a root canal, Dr. Zwier will remove the infected pulp, gently clean and shape the inside of the root canal, and then fill in and seal the space. A crown or other form of restoration will then be placed to protect the tooth.
While some people may be worried that the treatment is very painful, this is not the case. With today’s modern techniques, patients are comfortable during the procedure. As with any form of invasive dentistry, the tooth may feel sensitive after treatment. Over-the-counter pain medications can be used to relieve any discomfort during healing. It is important that patients continue to practice good oral hygiene such as brushing, flossing, and attending regular cleanings to ensure healthy teeth in the future.
